Day 9: Varanasi and a sick Kyle

Today we did our own thing. We had to check out of the hotel by 12pm. The boys had a big night with the Italians the night before, boy can the Italians drink! So they didn’t rise out of bed till 10ish. We packed up all our things and left them at reception and just left with our day bags. We first headed to the Brown Bread Bakery. We had been meaning to go here for a meal since we arrived in Varanasi but it just didn’t happen till now. The food was meant to be European style but I think they missed placed Europe on the map. The bread was so dense and dry it was almost to the point that you could not eat it. The rest of the food was ok but nothing like people make it out to be.

After breakfast we wondered the alleyways and streets of Varanasi to see what was around. We didn’t need to leave for the railway station till 5.30 to 6pm so we had ample of time to wonder. We found little Ghats that only the locals seemed to know about and tiny shops selling everything you could imagine. After wondering we found the main Ghat that all the locals bathed and washed from. While there we saw people drinking the Ganges water and they seemed to survive but I don’t know for how long. Alex and Kyle found these massage people that the Ganga is famous for. They seemed to enjoy the massage. We wondered for a while after that, and then Kyle said he wasn’t feeling very well so we headed back to the hotel to sit in the restaurant and have a cold drink and maybe lunch. Alex wasn’t ready to sit so he went of wondering by himself to see how lost he could get. While sitting there we just had a light lunch and some water. Kyle said that sitting was helping so we just stayed till it was time to leave for the train station. Alex came back after an hour or so with his forehead painted and drenched.

After a while more we got up and headed for the train station. This meant we had to negotiate the alleys to find a main road to get a car to the train station. This was not as bad as it was trying to get to our hotel. Over the last 2 days we had wondered the streets a few times so we kind of knew a way out. We managed to make it out in about 10min a new record yay. Once on the main road it was easy to find a car to take us to the train station, so off we went.

We made better time going to the station so we got their about an hour before the train. We found a waiting room that was for people travelling first class or in an a/c carriage. By this point Kyle was feeling shocking again so he just sat down and tried to sleep. Alex found an Indian jewellery to talk to and I read Kyle’s book on Kerry Packer. The train arrived early so on we got, found our seats and settled down for the 12 hour ride we had in front of us. Because of a festival or something happening this month in India the train was fully booked in 1a/c and 2a/c. We booked the tickets 2 months out and we just managed to ended up on 3a/c. The only difference between this and 2a/c is instead of 4 people there is 6. The people we sat with seemed nice but didn’t speak much English so we just talked amongst ourselves. Kyle was feeling even worse so he tried to get comfortable and sleep and not think about his stomach. Alex and I talked for a while then settled down to sleep. Kyle didn’t sleep very well at all. He was up and down all night and Alex and I was sound asleep though out the night so lucky us.
